If you’ve ever found yourself wandering around County Meath in Ireland, you might have heard of Dunsany Castle. It’s one of those places that has a little bit of everything – history, beauty, and a real sense of timelessness. For us at Dunsany Estate, Dunsany holds a special place because it’s where we’re working on the largest rewilding project in Ireland, bringing back nature and biodiversity to the land. But before we dive into that, let’s take a step back and look at the fascinating history of Dunsany Castle and Estate.
A Medieval Start: The Origins of Dunsany Castle
Dunsany Castle was built way back in the 11th century by the Plunkett family, who were granted the land by the King of England. It’s overlooks the rolling Meath countryside, and the location was chosen as much for its beauty as for its strategic importance. Back in medieval times, it wasn’t just about having a picturesque view; the castle needed to be a stronghold during the Anglo-Norman and Gaelic Irish conflicts.
The castle’s design reflected its military purpose – big walls, towering towers, and all the typical defenses you’d expect from a medieval fortress. While it’s not as massive as some of Ireland’s more famous castles, Dunsany has always had this quiet, understated grandeur. It’s one of those places that has a lot of history packed into its walls, but it also feels incredibly welcoming, like it’s just waiting to tell its stories to anyone who’s willing to listen.
The Plunkett Family: A Legacy of Stewardship
For over 800 years and to this day, the Plunkett family call Dunsany Castle home. Over the centuries, the Plunketts played a significant role in Ireland’s history, aligning themselves with the Catholic cause during the English Civil War and the 1641 rebellion. They were forward-thinking landowners who were deeply invested in the estate’s future.
In the 19th century, the Plunketts shifted their focus to agriculture, education, and the arts, planting trees and supporting the local ecosystem. The idea was simple: nurture the land, and the land would, in turn, support them. It’s a philosophy that continues today, and it’s something we at Dunsany Estate are proud to be a part of, especially as we work on rewilding parts of the estate.

Dunsany Today: A Blend of Past and Present
Fast forward to today, and Dunsany Castle is still a family estate. It’s no longer just a place of political intrigue – it’s a living, breathing piece of history that’s actively used for events like corporate meetings, weddings, and other special occasions. The Plunkett family still calls the estate home, and they continue to maintain the estate’s rich history while embracing new ideas that keep the estate thriving.
The estate spans 1,600 acres of beautiful rolling hills, woodlands, and lakes, offering corporate partners an escape into nature while still feeling connected to history. And one of the most exciting developments in recent years is the estate’s growing focus on sustainability and conservation. The Plunketts have always cared about the land, and now they’re bringing that care to a new level with a major rewilding effort that’s already underway.
Rewilding Dunsany Estate: Reviving Nature’s Glory
Rewilding is all about restoring natural ecosystems and bringing back the plants, animals, and habitats that once thrived there. At Dunsany, this effort is in full swing. The goal is to reintroduce native species, revitalise the soil, and bring back the biodiversity that has been lost over centuries of farming. The estate is already reforesting parts of the land, planting native trees, and rebuilding natural habitats.
Our role is to help restore the land, and we’re working with our corporate partners and the community to make it happen. For businesses, this is also a great opportunity to contribute to the rewilding effort. By sponsoring parts of the estate through Nature Shares and off-site Biodiversity Net Gain, companies can help offset their carbon emissions and make a real difference in the restoration of the land.
A Legacy for the Future
Dunsany Castle is more than just a historical landmark – it’s a living testament to the power of land and heritage. The estate’s history has shaped the land, but now it’s the land that will help shape the future. With rewilding efforts in full swing, Dunsany is becoming a model for conservation and sustainability, showing that we can protect the past while working to restore the environment for future generations.
By supporting the rewilding of Dunsany Estate, you’re not just helping preserve a piece of history – you’re investing in the future of the land itself. Dunsany Castle and its surrounding estate are a perfect blend of the old and the new, where history, nature, and sustainability come together in a way that’s truly unique.
